The Israelis are trying to kill the mideast peace initiative

We're only a week out from the "breakthrough" Annapolis meeting, and on top of everything else, Israel now announces plans to build 300 new homes in East Jerusalem.

  • I admit to not being terribly sophisticated about the psychological disorder known as Israeli-Palestinian relations, but are these people simply hellbent on destroying each other... no matter how long it takes or even if it means pain and misery for their own side?

    I'm convinced there is no interest in peace on either side. I'm just not sure if it's manifest by a powerful, vocal minority, or by a majority.

  • The Israeli people support peace in polling, although what that means is very non specific.

    But being a peace proponent is very much like running for office in the US in 2002 being anti-Iraq war.

    How can they possibly expect to be trusted?
    Two days ago Olmert made a domestic speech is which he declared that the PA will have to make all of the first moves, and then Israel will decide how they will respond. Not even a promise of reciprocation, just a "we'll see".
    If these are the 'negotiations' we've been waiting for, then Bush is going to look even worse than he did before he proposed negotiations. And with the Golan Heights 'off the table' the whole thing appears even the dumber than the sham that it is.
    This isn't even Israel asking for an unconditional surrender from the PA. It's asking for an unconditional surrender and maybe we'll * think about * cessation of hostilities.

  • Again, I'm just surprised that the pretense of peace has been abandoned so quickly. It's a slap in the face of a weakening Bush.

    Of course, if he's not going to support them on Iran.....
