Polling

Quiet day, so take a look at the data in the new Newsweek poll.

All kinds of interesting '08 presidential polling, (All three Dems beat all three Republicans in every head to head matchup,) but, if you're here, you might enjoy the summary article that starts like this,
It’s hard to say which is worse news for Republicans: that George W. Bush now has the worst approval rating of an American president in a generation, or that he seems to be dragging every ’08 Republican presidential candidate down with him.

I think this is a bit of an outlier at 28%, but Bush's approval matches Carter at his lowest point, the lowest Presidential approval ever recorded by Newsweek.

  • Bush = Iraq

    Bush = 28%

GOP candidates on Iraq = Bush

They're drowning in the shallow end, and the life preserver of withdrawal isn't an option.

As a Nebraskan, I'm intrigued by the idea of a Hagel candidacy and its effect on all this. The base is unconditionally for sticking it out. But could the new maverick -- a staunch conservative on all other issues, moreso even than some of the hard-liners -- win moderates? Democrats even?

Everybody calls him an idiot for waiting but I think it's a brilliant way to let the war play out and then jump in as a fresh alternative if he's right and pass if he's not.

  • I don't know if Hagel would get the traction even if he's right on the war because the media treat him as an outsider.

Would he be able to raise enough money for the media to treat him seriously?

But, I definitely agree that for him, the timing is critical. He needs to jump in right before or while Republicans abandon the Iraq/Bush ship, but too far out in front and he will be attacked by other Republicans.

He really will need to capitalize on a Republican anti-Iraq wave so that he can get tons of free airtime to compensate for not having raised big money.

If he wants to go, and wants it to work, timing will be critical. I think there might be an opening if he picks his spot just right.

  • Newsweek ALWAYS has the lowest approval/highest disapproval for Bush. Look at it historically. I think the numbers perhaps come from how they ask the questions and how they try and get "Don't knows" to join either the approval or disapproval camps.

Rasumssen, on the other hand, usually has the highest approval/lowest disapproval ratings for Bush. He says that's because he asks the questions in such a way that there are very few leaners. Bush currently enjoys 40% approval/58% disapproval in Rasmussen.

I suppose the reality is somewhere between the two. But both the Newsweek and the Rasmussen polls are relatively stable in terms of movement. Gallup, on the other hand, seems to me to be the most unstable. It sometimes jumps 6 to 12 points in two weeks, then jumps back 6 to 12 points.

Anyway you look at it, Bushie's in Carter territory.

  • I knew Rasmussen polled high, but wasn't aware that Newsweek polled low, but they do both trend pretty steady.

I think you;re right that behind the eyepopping number, the bottom line is that the trend is still down.

    David Broder must be sad.
