Now it's Petraeus' plan

I just finished watching a Bush statement and a few questions at the Pentagon and was struck by how much the President seemed to stress that "the surge" is Petraeus' plan.

This marks such a turn from January/February when the White House portrayed a President weighing all the evidence in his seclusion and making a Solomon-like judgement. Now it's all Petraeus' plan.

Obviously it's an effort to gain distance for both Bush and the Republican party when "the surge" goes belly up, but I'm left wondering how Petraeus feels about this.

(Also, Bush hasn't spoken to Cheney at all since Cheney met with all the Iraqi principles over 24 hours ago? Not even curious?)

  • It's Tommy Franks all over again. Remember Rummy doing the little side-step shuffle after the first year or so? Rummy suddenly shifted from the take-charge mission man to the "just doin' what Tommy told me to" man.

  • Yup.

And this is very common historically, however it should be noted that it usually takes place after the strategy is considered failed.

So, is this the White House prepping us for that? I say yes.

  • In unrelated news, I just read the funniest headline in a long time. From Reuters on my Yahoo! page:

Rice "troubled" by Kremlin's concentration of power

Talk about your irony. I can picture Vlad laughing his ass off at BushCo complaining about power consolidation. What is Rice thinking... oh, wait. There's that word again: "thinking."

  • Nobody in the world pays any attention to anything Condi Rice says.

After all, it's Dick Cheney who went to Afghanistan and Pakistan. It's Dick Cheney who went to Iraq, and now Egypt and Saudi doing what is supposed to be Condi Rice's job.

    She's a worldwide joke.

  • Sad. She looks so good on paper...

  • That's one of the reasons she's been promoted out of her competence.

She should be a back room strategist, that's what her brains and history suggest, but she is too much of a pushover to be a valid fighter, either in the White House or on the world stage.
