Would the Iranians leave a trail?

Rephrasing a question Lew asked in the comments.

The English character markings on the Iranian weapons are required by international law, however, if the Iranians were going to supply them to target the US, wouldn't you expect them to "scratch off the serial numbers?"

I can understand if they were smuggled back from Hezbullah where such markings would grant Iran political benefit in the Muslim world, but if "weapons to Iraq" was sanctioned by the top Iranian officials what benefit do they gain by shipping clear evidence into Iraq?

Why wouldn't they do what private Sunni groups are doing out of Saudi, Egypt, Jordan, etc, and work through arms brokers to obtain untraceable ex-Soviet bloc munitions?

I mean, Iran has pretty good intelligence services.

  • Who know if the alleged serial numbered evidence was actually found in Iraq. Did anyone say, "this fragment was found in the remains of an explosion detonated on 2/4/07 in Sadr city"? Otherwise, it is perfectly in keeping with this administration to present material from Lebanon (as an example, but never calling it an example) and leave it to the reporters and the public to infer it is legitimate.

I'm so cynical regarding this administration, I believe there is nothing -- and I mean nothing -- they would do to advance their agenda.

  • I don't really suspect them of fabricating these objects, because certainly there are Iranian weapons in Iraq, but I do certainly believe that they may be selectively releasing and manipulating the context.

I think it's oh so telling that nobody would go on record to make these claims.
