Quickhits

(ABC) Iraq moved more troops into Baghdad. 130, and they had to bribe them with a months pay.

FoxNews brings back the gas mask image. (to remind us of why we're supposed to be in Iraq?)

(BBC) Four French nationals in a much larger group were gunned down in Saudi Arabia. "A French diplomatic source, quoted by the French news agency AFP, said an unknown number of attackers "machine-gunned them while they got out [of their vehicle] to go for a walk".

(WaPo) "The Post-ABC poll found that 53 percent of Americans favored setting a deadline for troop withdrawals." (45% said within a year.)

(CNN) Notice the backhanded slam by Condi Rice speaking about Obama's race and the presidency.. "And it will not be long, I think, before it's no longer a barrier to being president of the United States." (Clearly implying that it now still is.)

  • Check out McClatchy on the failure of the surge so far. Key quote:

"From Dec. 1, 2006, through Feb. 14, the number of people killed in public places from violent attacks averaged 14.8 a day. From Feb. 15 through Monday, the number declined, but just barely, to 13.8. Car bombs were up slightly, from an average of 1.2 a day to 1.6, while roadside bombs were identical at 1 per day.

Injuries, on average, rose from 40.4 a day to 52.8 since the start of the plan, while bodies dumped by death squads declined from 22.8 a day to 14.6."

Sadr is keeping his militiamen from grabbing people and dumping their bodies, so that stat goes down. But every other stat is either just about the same or worse than before the surge started.

  • Thanks. I hadn't seen that.

I have been watching some of the "metrics" on the operation though.

Arrests are reasonable, but you figure alot of that was on existing intel.

But the weapons finds have been very low. A number of caches, although most of them have been one or two weapons or ammo clips or RPG heads. Not much of anything.

The only big bust so far was the "carbomb factory" where supposedly they were making the chlorine bombs. The rumor I aw was that that intel was provided by someone in the Sunni movement who thought the tactic was wrong.
