The House leadership not imposing disclipline on Iraq plan?
Maybe lost today was this quote.
The Republican (minority) leadership is greenlighting dissent?
“Voters will recognize a phony and a fraud,” said Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma, who is leading the Republicans’ 2008 efforts to gain back the majority they lost in the House. “If you believe the president is right you should say so. If you have a legitimate and honest difference with the president, you shouldn’t hesitate to draw that difference.”

Well, they have to start distancing themselves from the president at some point if they expect to have any chance to regain control of Congress. No accident that it is Cole saying this.

I agree fully, but it seems awful early to turn them loose.
Of course, if the surge goes badly, it will be an issue/vote that will be remembered. This isn't some rules and procedural.

Good point about the surge. It is a big gamble to back this plan.
I figure they need to distance themselves now so that it doesn't look like they are just abandoning the president the week before the election, so to speak.

I hadn't thought about it that way setting up their credibility for later.
Hmmmm.... That's interesting. Maybe they did learn something in 2006.
