The Yuppies vs. "Old Man" McCain

I don't know why this suddenly struck me, but the likely three Dem candidates for '08 are all mostly Yuppies. Hillary Clinton is a sort of, but tell me that Barak Obama wouldn't fit right in at that cocktail party. And, John Edwards, for god's sakes, he's a yuppie dreamboat.

Now, all of them are really successful beyond that, but their images, manners, and language, especially Edwards and Obama echo the broad suburban swathes.

Those three will most likely match up against McCain who will be 74 and exhausted by summer 2008, or the creepy looking Giuliani.

If the battleground is the suburban stretches, who does better, the successful neighbor or the angry father?

(Just a random thought. If I'm wrong, let me know. Maybe I should have said "suburbanites?")

  • HRC grew up in privilege but the other two would take exception to the Yuppie label, I think.

Edwards is under attack lately for taking on the poverty issue. He's supposed to be a hypocrite because he's a multi-millionaire and he's concerned about poverty. I guess FDR would be under attack for that reason today too. Apparently only welfare mothers and homeless guys living in the Port Authority Bus Terminal can properly take on the poverty issue politically.

BTW, did you see the hit job CNN did on Edwards on Thursday? Ed Henry (the second dumbest motherfucker on CNN when it comes to breaking through administration spin - Joe Johns is the first) and Suzanne Malveaux went at him hard and heavy. My favorite part - when Henry (who frankly looks like somebody in the Henry family knew somebody else in the Henry family) asked Edwards why he was advocating "surrender in Iraq."

Amazing. Just amazing. Our liberal media in action. They all want to be FOX Lite.

  • Reality, Yeah, Bill was pretty Yuppie in his own way, Hillary much less so.

What I was really trying to refer to was their dress, their image, their appearance, their mannerisms, their language, etc. Their "relatability" I guess.

They look and behave like more successful versions of my neighbors, you know?

Neither Obama or Edwards had the Yuppie upbringing, but they are that young, educated set.

(And, if wealthy people didn't take on poverty issues, nothing would happen. The poor don't have lobbyists.)

And, I didn't see the Henry piece, but I'm not at all surprised. He often takes on the language of the right. (probably reads their handouts and media and absorbs it.)

  • I think Edwards is great but I just don't know what has changed since 2004 except that he is two years older. The more I think about the Dems in 2008, the more I think the nomination is Al Gore's to lose: he was robbed in 2000, has been consistently right on Iraq (unlike Hillary), and will not have a problem with either cash or name recognition... I wrote a story on this at www.minor-ripper.blogspot.com

  • Cool, I'll take a look.

I agree that Al Gore may be the heavyweight wildcard. The question I have is how he does fundraising if he doesn't start sending out signals soon. It's a relatively small pool of large donors and you figure that he has some overlap with Hillary Clinton. Either he has to send the signals now or try to pry already committed donors away.

On the plus side, he comes in with big name recognition and primary identity on his big issue, so he wouldn't have to spend a lot of money introducing himself or associating with issues.
