"We need to look forward, not back"

For about two and a half years the Bush administration has been repeatedly emphasizing that on Iraq we need to look forward, not back, that attention should be focused not on the mistakes that have been made, but on "the way forward."

Look, Saddam is history. He has had no relevance in Iraq from the day the US brought him in. Certainly, Saddam was a bad man, but his execution will have no impact on the civil war currently overflowing the Iraqi cup, and his execution will not solve a single problem facing the US in Iraq.

America needs a meaningful strategy for Iraq, but it's being told to wait, and wait again.

First we must hang Mussolini in the square.

Other than the fact that I fear a LOT of people are going to die in the next 48 hours, with Saddam's execution as an excuse.

  • Yeah, I do think there will be an increase, but my sense is that it will be that much worse than when the verdict came down or several of the other big events.

The hatred really can't go much deeper, and although this will act as a common emotional or rallying point for the Sunnis, I would think that at this point the hatreds would be far more personal based on the loss of loved ones and friends.

Plus, this has been coming for so long as a fait accompli and everybody's on the ready.

They're going to have the full curfew in place which won't stop everything, but will sloww it somewhat.

The real worry for me is the soldiers in the Sunni held areas, Anbar, Baquba/Diyala, even the airbase at Balad. I would expect some attacks, at least indirect mortar fire, across that entire swathe.

The real question to me is whether Sunni groups use this occasion to conduct attacks outside of Iraq against US interests, in Jordan or in Saudi for example.

Again, everybody's on the ready, but that would mark a significant escalation and change in the existing "rules."

But what do I know, I'm not the one in the bombers sights.
