A rough, very close up story on Damian Fernandez, discharged from active service, diagnosed with severe PTSD, and involuntarily recalled for deployment.

That is an absolutely devastating story. Thanks... I think.

Exactly. I always hate to link these because it's just one experience, but there's no good way to really capture the experience as a whole.

Unfortunately,his case is not as rare as one would hope. I remember finding quite a few stories when I blogged about it. Also, you may have already seen this, but the Hartford Courant wrote a great survey of the issue back in May. http://www.courant.com/news/specials/hc-mental4.artmay17,0,3488576.story

Yeah, unfortunately, I've come across several. MSNBC ran a documentary last night on a marine sniper who was deployed inAnbar. Even when he was trying to be normal, it was obvious he wasn't. At the end, they they put up a graphic saying that despite his discharge, he had been recalled and the unit he was in charge of took serious casualties from an IED.

He didn't want to go back, but he got called back. I think they said it "deeply affected him."
