Two from tonight's news

On CBS they reported that KBR(Halliburton) has suffered 50 killed and 3,500 wounded in Iraq. With all the truck convoys, I'm not all that surprised at 50 killed, but 3,500 wounded..... (It was in a story on PTSD, so maybe that's the explanation.)

Also, on NBC, Richard Engel reported that Maliki is increasingly being called "the mayor of the Green Zone." That appellation had been used by war critics for awhile, but what does it say that it's reached a usage level that Engel is reporting it?

  • I can't believe the way that the Green Zone is so casually mentioned in the press. When did the idea of an occupying army building a massive military base in the center of a foreign city become so acceptable?

Furthermore, when did caring what the appointed premier (Malaki getting stoned as reported all over the western press) says and does matter more than the democratically elected premier (Talabani, in Iran this weekend), when the whole excuse for the invasion in the first place fell back on "bringing democracy?"

    I just don't get it.

  • That's a really good point about the Green Zone. And not only was it appropriated land, but the huge US embassy will be there forever claiming that prime spot on the bend in the river forever.

(And, Maliki was selected as Prime Minister by the parliament through a rough parallel of the European parliamentary system. He wasn't directly elected, but neither was Tony Blair. He is PM because of a ruling coalition.

That's why Sadr's withdrawal threat is so big. That's a large part of his support, and if anyone could get a no confidence vote....)
