Pulling out of Baghdad?

I'd really like to hear more about this before I declare it huge news, but a recommendtion to completely pull out of Baghdad by a top uniformed general would represent a huge admission of policy failure.

There are hints as to identity, "probably the most respected man in uniform today," and "he made it to the civilian leadership of the United States."

  • General Pace?

    What is your guess?

  • I really don't know.

"Most respected" made me think of maybe Chiarelli, but I don't know if he's in Washington yet, and Chiarelli has been key in looking at the war in new ways.

Pace isn't a bad guess, at all.

    Maybe Schoomaker?

I'm really not wired in well enough to make a great guess.

  • I like both your choices.

I'm definately not well enough wired in to make a good guess, but Pace is probably too close to the president to be realisitic choice.

Let's hope we get to find out soon.

  • I sent an email to Copy editor who is pretty tuned into the military structure, and he went with Abizaid, Casey, or less likely Pace.

    Just so you know.

  • Thanks for noting my opinion.

On CNN today, they said one brigade of the 4 ID was scheduled to return home next month, or in a month. It will be interesting to see if they are held over to increase combat power in Baghdad. The First Cav is scheduled to replace the 4 ID in this rotation.

It will be interesting to see.

  • I think it's hard to say.

Is there going to be a major shift in strategy after the elections? If not, they probably get held over (unless they plan to rotate them back in 12.) Or will they bring them home and leave the rest as they currently are treading water and fighting current.

The policy is hostage to the election at this point, and the soldiers are hostage to the policy.
