Picture of the Day - 2

These are the mountains that stretch for hundreds of miles along the Afghanistan Pakistan border. The US has 12,000 troops operating "in the east" from Kabul up into these mountains.

  • These photos really slam home the enormity of the geography in which the true terrorists traverse.

We sit in our Hummers and can't find the mall without using the onboard navigation system. We are blissfully -- but dangerously -- ignorant of the world outside our cocoon, and are therefore easilly led like sheep when our would-be leaders crack the whip of fear.

  • That's exactly why I put these up. The immensity of the problem.

Air cover/superiority helps alot, but even with infrared it is remarkably difficult to spot small armed groups.

And when they're found, it is extremely difficult to air deploy in.

There's a reason the Pashtun people have been able to resist multiple invaders for a thousand years. On top of the natural defensive advantages, this is also their land, and they know these mountains and terrain.

    It's a real problem.
