Leave it to the experts
It's not that I don't care, but because I think it's so important, I'm going to leave the NSA story to the experts. These are the best people I've read on it so far. Josh Marshall. Laura Rozen. Jane Hamsher. Talk Left. That's a good start. If you have any additions, let me know.

Here's my take on the NSA issue.
Not only is having NSA conduct domestic surveillance illegal, obviously illegal, it's also expressly against NSA's charter and therefore mind-numbingly stupid.
The administration could have chosen any agency to conduct surveillance of this type, but to choose the one agency that has historically been very good at what they do? Criminally short-sighted.
The mind boggles.

Yeah, I just don't understand this. They must've known they were across the line on this one.
And, quite frankly, if they'd done it for a week or maybe even a month after 9-11, I don't think people would be screaming as much. Still illegal, but understandable. It's that they kept doing it even when there were legal alternatives available.
