Sini at Jusiper found this in a NYTimes piece: Friends describe Mr. Cheney as subdued since the indictment of his chief of staff and friend, I. Lewis Libby Jr., and they say they are concerned about his weight, which appears to be up again after his recent years of keeping it under control. Mr. Cheney, 64, has had four heart attacks, and in September had surgery to repair aneurysms in arteries behind both his knees.
I would wager that this is actually laying the groundwork for Cheney to step aside at some future point. Don't get too excited. Whoever they bring in to replace him is gonna suddenly be a favorite for the 2008 election. Giuliani, anyone?
Somehow, I don't find "fat Cheney" as endearing as "fat Elvis."

It won't be Giuliani, but it would be highly entertaining to see the Religious Right's reaction--the man would be a heartbeat away from picking the Supreme Court. And don't forget what one of my favorite Senate candidates ever, Judge Alex Sanders of South Carolina, said about the man during a debate against Lindsey Graham: "His wife kicked him out and he moved in with two gay men and a Shih Tzu. Is that South Carolina values? I don't think so."

One of the things that terrifies me about the whole administration mess is that either Bush or Cheney or both get kicked out, impeached, resign, or get fried by a just God on national TV. Which, as you note, opens the way to a new beginning for the GOP. I hope we can hold on to these crooks until the election in 08 and make a clean break and fresh start. That is, if our nation can survive that long.

Sini, True, Giuliani is Pro life, but at this point he is popular enough in the middle, that they could lose half the "anti-choice" single issue voters and still win. Besides, who are freaky right gonna vote for? Hillary Clinton? Biden? Could spawn my dream of a "true religion" third party candidate splitting the Republican vote, though.
Although I would say this, a friend of mine pointed out to me, Giuliani is very popular, we'll see if that lasts when he has to make public statements again. Right now, he's a picture book icon, but that won't last if he actually has to take (gasp) positions.
Cephas, if Bush to go for some reason and Cheney takes over, there would be no Republican bounce. If they both disappeared for some reason, Denny Hastert would take over, and I don't think that helps republicans. Though, I do think we might see Cheney step aside for the "next republican president".
But, if you really thought you were future Republican president material, would you sign up right now, and base your political future on the Bush administration turning around in the polls? There have been a number or reports that some potentially great republican candidates are shying away from running in 2006 because they don't want to have to fight the coattails. Or would you wait?

Oops, I meant that Rudy can't get the nomination. There isn't too much of a middle among GOP primary voters. If they are only, say, 30% of the electorate and they get split four ways (betwen, say, McCain, Romney, Giuliani and Hagel), that ought to leave the field wide open for George Allen or whomever the right wing cranks turn towards.
In a general election with no incumbent, bets are always off. If by some miracle Rudy were to make it into the general, he could certainly win. But it would still be hard to see how a pro-choice homophile explain himself to evangelicals. I hope we get to see him try.
